The Skill of Mindful Adjustments
withKarenRussell at HYS Edgedale
Next held on Fri, 27 Oct 2017 at 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
This enrollment runs from Fri 27 Oct 2017 - Sun 29 Oct 2017
Great yoga teachers give amazing verbal cues and hands-on adjustments. However, not all adjustments are beneficial and many students have been injured by them.
As a yoga teacher, you’ve likely have seen students in your classes who look uncomfortable and awkward in a pose and wished you could help them find more ease in the pose. However, even if your yoga teacher training included how to do hands-on adjustments, you may not feel confident adjusting people’s poses in class. Perhaps you’ve tried to do an adjustment, but it didn’t have the effect you wanted, or you are afraid of hurting someone, or you find it difficult to do an adjustment and keep teaching the rest of the class at the same time.
This training takes how to do hands-on adjustments and breaks the skill down into smaller and simpler chunks for you to practice. This allows you to internalise each of the smaller skills and then build them back up again so you learn the skill at a deeper level without feeling overwhelmed by having to memorise a lot of information. This course is very hands on and you’ll lots of practice adjustments so that you could feel more confident incorporating them into your regular classes.
In this advanced teacher training course, you’ll learn how to give safe, mindful and effective adjustments for over 30 common yoga poses. You’ll learn how to recognise where tension is held in student’s bodies, such as stiff low backs, tight and shortened hamstrings, as well as limited shoulder and hip mobility and discover how to help these students find steadiness and ease in a pose. The majority of these adjustments do not require the student to be in the posture for a long time, so they can done whilst teaching a flow style class whilst delivering verbal cues to the rest of the class, although we will also look at some deeper adjustments.
You’ll leave this course feeling confident to adjust a variety of poses both on a one-to-one basis and in a large class setting. You’ll learn adjustments that will support and encourage your students physically, mentally and emotionally to develop their yoga practice. You’ll enhance your teaching skills, improve the quality of your classes and deepen your connection with your students.
Karen has been practising yoga for over 20 years and teaching for the last 12. She’s a Yoga Alliance Senior Yoga Teacher with over 9000 hours of teaching experience. Her adjustments feel natural, supportive and non-judgemental because she has a way of knowing what to do to help students find space and ease right where they are without forcing them into an ideal pose.
