Frequently asked questions at Hot Yoga Sheffield

Please browse through our frequently asked questions to find answers to any of your questions relating to Hot Yoga Sheffield.

What should I bring? 

  • Appropriate clothes for class
  • 2 decent-sized towels
  • A water bottle
  • Dry clothes to change into afterwards
  • Completed registration form on your first class

What should I wear? 

We recommend wearing tight fitting shorts and a tank top (or vest in the UK) and suggest that you avoid loose clothes because you will sweat and then they will get clingy and generally very annoying.

Some people prefer to wear a t-shirt that covers their belly and calf-length yoga pants. Other people prefer to wear as little as possible and have coordinated hot yoga outfits that resemble two-piece bathing suits, or swimming costumes.

A few more guidelines about what to wear:
You need to be dressed appropriately, meaning only wearing boxer shorts, a bra, or skimpy bikini, is not sufficient.


Not all black leggings are created equal. Put them on and come into hands-to-feet pose whilst a good friend checks to see if yours become see-through when bent over.

Not all shorts are created equal. Lie down on your back and bring one knee up to your chest and have a good friend check to see if your goods are on display. Also have them check from behind when you are in balancing stick pose.

Although it could go without saying, you need to be wearing clothing. Whilst we’ve had inquires about naked yoga, this is not something we offer. However, there are a couple places in London that run mixed and men only classes.
Classes are done barefeet, so leave your shoes in reception. If you have a veruca, then please keep your socks on until you are on your mat.


What should I expect? 

Classes begin with setting an intention or focus for the class, followed by breathing exercises and/or warm up poses, such as sun/moon salutations to ease out any stiffness in your body.

Next there is a sequence of standing postures, which often challenge your balance, build strength and begin to open up your body. After this this there is a sequence of postures on the floor, which allow you to move deeper into your body with back bends, forward bends and twists.

In some classes, the postures are repeated to allow you to focus on alignment first and then move deeper into your body. Other classes include more challenging poses here, such as arm balances.

All classes end with either a second breathing exercise or finishing sequence and then a final savasana.

Come with an open mind. Some people love hot yoga from their very first class, whereas other people take a few more classes before they feel the benefits. Give it a try and see how you feel.

Who is hot yoga for? 

People from all ages, all walks of life, and all abilities do hot yoga.
There are as many reasons for doing hot yoga as there are students. Here are a few…

  • You want to challenge yourself
  • You want a good workout
  • You want to try something different
  • You want to be more productive at work or school
  • You want to connect with yourself
  • You feel stiff and inflexible and want to become limber
  • You want to make changes in your life
  • You feel cold and want to be warm
  • You want to be more patient with your children
  • You need some time for yourself

What’s your reason to do hot yoga?

It’s my first class – what should I do? 

Come prepared…

Bring at least 1 towel and a bottle of water. Some people also like to have a second towel to dry off after class and we do have mats, but you are always welcome to bring your own.

Arrive at least 20 minutes early…
This will give you enough time to get settled and fill in a registration form. Or save a copy of it here and complete it in advance. If you have any injuries or conditions that might affect your practice we’ll discuss if there are any modifications you may need.

Also depending on the sequence taught, the teacher may go through the first breathing exercise with you because many people find it easier if they have practiced it once or twice beforehand.

Relax, take it easy…
The teachers will talk you through each posture and if there is often a high proportion of new students they’ll demonstrate more of the postures. If you are uncertain, then you can look at the students in the front row (closest to the mirror) and after class ask your teacher about any questions or concerns you may have.

Know that this is your class, so you can take it at your own pace. If you need to sit out a posture to recover your breath, then stand quiet and focused and join in on the next set. Many people have no troubles at all and even if you do, then you’ll likely find that after a few classes you’ll be able to make it through the whole class.


How often should I come? 

It really depends on what you want to get out of it. People definitely report benefits from going just once a week, but they feel that it starts to wear off after 5-6 days. If you are looking to see significant changes in your life then 3 times a week is the minimum needed based on our experiences, and greater than 5 times per week if you really want to see changes quickly.

Many people like to go on an almost daily basis. It is a fantastic class because it can help you in so many ways. Some people come because they want to lose weight and going on a regular basis really speeds the process up. Other people come because they like the meditative aspect and it increases their focus and concentration so they are more productive on the days they go.

If you do a 30 or 60 day challenge, then you’ll often find that any concerns about not being able to do it are all in your head; the physical side is surprisingly easy because you get into a routine and just do it. And when you go almost every day, you really notice the difference on the days you don’t go, it’s as if your body craves the yoga.

Although you may not be able to attend classes that frequently, you can still benefit from a weekly class and supplement it with a home practice. You’ll find that by doing just a few minutes of yoga every day will help to calm your mind and loosen up your body.

Why is the room heated? 

For two main reasons – the heat gives you access to many physiological and psychologicalbenefits. In other words, it’s good for your body and your mind.

Physiological benefits:
  • Your body works harder – you get a great workout without going to the gym or having to run for 12 miles
  • Your muscles are warm – you get a deeper stretch with less chance of injury
  • You will sweat – cleansing your skin and giving you the hot yoga glow

Psychological benefits:
  • The class is challenging – you feel a sense of accomplishment afterwards
  • You train your mind – you enhance your ability to focus and concentrate, as well as increasing your self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-respect
  • You connect with your inner self – you access deeper levels of meditation

I’m worried about the heat – should I be? 

It’s hard for us to give an unbiased answer to this question because we love the heat.

If you get cold very easily, then you’ll likely love it right away and when you walk into the hot room you’ll immediately feel all your muscles start to relax and all the tension just releases out of you.

In contrast, if you are the type of person who doesn’t like the heat, then you may keep coming back to class because you love what the hot yoga does for your body and mind.

If you are concerned about the heat, it is important to realize that it takes approximately two weeks for your body to acclimatize to a dramatic change in temperature. Therefore, go easy on yourself while your body is adapting.

You can stand or sit out a posture if you need to. You can also control your breathing by slightly constricting the back of your throat, which will result in a slow, even breath that keeps your heart rate down and has a cooling effect on your body.

But don’t just take it from us, here is what a student had to say about the heat, “Before trying hot yoga I had thought that the heat would be distracting, but actually I’ve found it helps focus.”

I go to the gym and don’t sweat. Will I really sweat in this class? 

The simple answer is YES!

So long as the heat and humidity are sufficient, then you will indeed sweat. However, you will quickly get used to the feeling of sweat running down your body and allow it to do its thing.

The sweat is cleansing and feels good. It helps to keep you cool and if you wipe it away, then that prevents its cooling effect and your body will sweat even more.

What if I’m not flexible? 

Many people think that they need to be flexible to do yoga, but we tend to think that’s like saying you need to be strong to lift weights - just as you become stronger by lifting weights, you’ll start to gain flexibility by doing yoga.

This is especially true of hot yoga – because your muscles are warm, your body will be more open and pliable and you’ll find that you can stretch more deeply than you can at room temperature.


What if I’ve never done yoga before? 

Great! We’re glad that you are looking to start now. All of us were beginners once and can remember our first class, and perhaps you are both excited and nervous.

Although all classes are accessible for beginners, which class you want to start with will depending on your current level of fitness and how comfortable you are with jumping into something new. Orange (Hot Yoga) classes are representative of traditional hot yoga classes and they go up and down in intensity from there. If you are already active and fit, then feel free to try a Red (Hot Flow) class as well. Whereas, if you want to use hot yoga to get back into shape or are more hesitant, then you may want to start with a Yellow (Hot Yin) class.

Many people come to hot yoga without any previous yoga experience because this type of yoga is great for people who are stiff, or have had injuries or just like the feeling of having a really good workout. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you start to see progress and feel the benefits. Many people report already sleeping better after the first class.

What if I have an injury? 

In general, hot yoga is great for helping you recover from an injury and many athletes use hot yoga as a way to prevent injury and enhance their performance.

If you are currently healing, then make sure you let your teacher know before class about what you’ve done and how it is currently feeling. Often we can make suggestions or recommendations for you to adapt certain postures to your current abilities.

Know that it is your practice and your primary concern should be taking care of yourself. Be aware of your edge and respect where your practice is on the day.

I’ve done other types of yoga before – will this help? 

You’ll likely find that there are similarities to the other types of yoga that you’ve done before. You might find that some of the postures are exactly the same, or they might be variations on what you’ve done before.

Some people find that having previous yoga experience makes the class easier, whereas other people find it a bit challenging at the start because they have certain expectations about how a posture is done.

Each posture has a range of expression levels, from quite easy to very challenging, so even if you’ve done yoga for a while, then you’ll likely find that hot yoga allows you to keep exploring your edge.

I’ve done Bikram yoga before – what’s different about your classes? 

That’s fantastic! Welcome to class   We have quite a few people who have done Bikram yoga in other cities and countries. If you love the Bikram series and want something similar, then chose one of Koreen’s Orange classes as she teaches the same set of postures with a few variations from the Bikram style. This is what she has to say about how her classes differ from Bikram classes…

“I do not use the Bikram dialogue so it is unlikely that you’ll hear me say ‘lock the knee’ ‘like a flower petal blooming’ or ‘connect the medula to the oblongata’. Indeed, given my 16 years in academia, of which 11 were in Neuroscience, I can assure you that you’ll never hear me say the last one. I also do a couple things slightly different; for example, I tend to have people go into toe-stand directly after tree on each side and do a child’s pose between camel and rabbit.”

Students who have done both types of classes have said that Koreen teaches a more technically precise class. Specifically, they felt as if they know what they need to do in each pose and that this makes it much easier for beginners to be able to do the yoga, rather than feeling overwhelmed on their first class.

Other differences are that our class sizes are smaller, which allows for more personalised attention, and our teachers are free to create their own sequences and adapt the class to the needs of the students.
